How templates work

Templates decide how your résumé and cover letter look. HitApply writes tailored content for each job, and the template lays it out on the page.

Résumé and cover letter templates

You keep separate templates for each document:

  • Résumé templates are under Resume in the sidebar.
  • Cover letter templates are under Cover Letter.

The one marked Currently using is used for every new document. To switch, press Use template on another one. Documents you've already generated keep their look until you regenerate them.

Three ways to add a template

Press Add template on the Resume or Cover Letter page, then choose one:

You can also have an AI assistant write one for you. See Make one with an AI assistant.

Drafts and ready templates

A new or imported template starts as a Draft. HitApply checks it when you save it in the editor:

  1. It has the parts HitApply needs to fill it in.
  2. HitApply can build a sample document from it.
  3. That document compiles to a PDF.

When all three pass, the Draft label goes away and you can use the template. If one fails, the editor tells you what to fix.

Templates hold design, not your content

A template never contains your name, jobs or skills. HitApply fills those in from your profile, tailored to each job. So one template works for every application, and you can change design at any time without retyping anything.

Cover letters are the one exception: an imported cover letter keeps its text as an editable Letter, kept separate from its Design.
