Scout

Your assistant

Scout is HitApply's assistant. It lives in the round ✦ button in the bottom-right corner of every page.

Open Scout

  • Click the ✦ button, or press Ctrl+J (⌘J on a Mac) from anywhere in the app.
  • Press Esc or the same shortcut to close it. What you typed is still there when you open it again, until you reload the page.
  • The expand button in Scout's header turns it into a side panel. On a phone it opens full screen.
  • On your first visit Scout says hello once in a small bubble above the button.

Scout's pet

A small pixel dog keeps Scout company by the button. Each time you load a page it's somewhere new: sitting on top of the button, peeking out from behind it, or hanging off its side. It hops when you point at the button, naps after half a minute without you, and wakes when you come back. It stays still if your device is set to reduce motion, and it doesn't appear on phones.

Don't want it? Type /pet to hide it, and /pet again to bring it back. This browser remembers your choice.

Ask Scout

Type a question and press Enter. Scout can help with:

  • your job search: what to look for, how to tailor a résumé or cover letter, preparing for interviews;
  • using HitApply: it answers from these guides and links you to the right one.

Ask where something is ("Where is my API key?") and Scout links you straight to the page.

Scout stays on topic. It won't help with things unrelated to your job search, and it doesn't give legal, immigration, visa, tax or financial advice. Ask a qualified professional for those.

Scout's chat runs on the AI key in Settings, the same one HitApply uses to write your documents. Without a key, or once your credits run out, the text box is switched off. The commands still work.

Your conversations with Scout stay in this browser tab and disappear when you reload, with one exception: résumé and cover letter conversations are saved with that application (see below).

On the résumé, cover letter and profile editors

On these pages Scout becomes that page's assistant, marked with a label in its header.

  • Résumé and cover letter: Scout suggests edits to the document you're editing and can Apply them. Ctrl+Z undoes an applied change. The conversation is saved with the application, so it's there when you come back, and Scout reads it when you ask your next question. /clear clears it from view; the saved conversation is kept.
  • Profile: Scout helps turn a job or project into résumé bullets you can Apply to your profile.

Commands

Type / to see the commands for the page you're on. Use the arrow keys to pick one and Enter or Tab to run it.

CommandWhat it does
/reportReport a bug or share an idea with the HitApply team
/helpList what Scout can do on this page
/docsOpen these guides in a new tab
/clearClear the conversation from view
/petHide or show the pet
/queryOn Discover: describe the job you want and Scout drafts a search for it. Press Search this to run it. Needs an AI key.

Report a bug or share an idea

Type /report, or /report followed by your message, then choose Bug, Idea or Other and press Send to the team (or Ctrl+Enter).

From the HitApply extension, click Report at the bottom of its menu. It opens HitApply with the report form ready.

What the team receives:

  • Your words, exactly as you typed them. Scout doesn't rewrite or summarize them.
  • A screenshot of the page you're on, if you leave it switched on. Scout takes it when the form opens and shows you a preview first. Click the preview to see it full size, or press Retake. Scout itself and private fields, such as your API key, are blanked out of the picture.
  • The page address, your browser and your window size, so we can reproduce the problem.

Only the HitApply team can see your reports. You can send up to 20 a day. Deleting your account deletes your reports and screenshots with it.
